The Linguistics Department maintains two collections of books and journals for the benefit of faculty, students, and other scholars affiliated with the department. One is housed in the Linguistics Library (Room B), and the other in the departmental Reading Room.

Room B is a quiet, locked study located on the third floor of Widener Library. It houses an extensive collection of books related to historical linguistics and offers an invaluable resource Indo-Europeanists. Room B also contains a few books relating to other subfields of linguistics, but circulating duplicate copies of all such works are available in the general Widener stacks as well. We urge library users to consult these copies first.

Books in the Room B collection do not circulate, and the room is kept locked. Students and other Harvard affiliates who need to consult works housed in Room B should see the departmental administrator for a key.

The departmental Reading Room is located in the Linguistics Department on the third floor of Boylston Hall. It is a popular place for students to hold discussions and to study quietly in the department. The Reading Room houses the PhD dissertations and AB and AM theses written in the department, as well as a modest collection of foreign language dictionaries and working papers and journals from other institutions. Materials in the room circulate for brief periods. We ask that users of the Reading Room leave a record of the materials they borrow in the grey binder provided for the purpose.
